It’s Party Time!

Hey, we are officially in the fall season with all the pumpkins and cinnamon apples popping up once again. Unfortunately, COVID is still a miss, so a lot of the traditional trick or treating has been either restricted or non-existence (depending on where you live) this year.

Fear not! Just because trick or treaters won’t be knocking on your door every 5 minutes doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy this day the right way. Scary movies and costume parties are alternatives to a great night. With parties, we’ll need music, and what better way to celebrate than to show which Halloween songs I look forward to adding to my playlist this month! Let’s count down the top 10 out of hundreds of songs. There are going to be a few exceptions to this list:

  1. All are not official Halloween songs.
  2. No typical songs like “This is Halloween” are going to be included.
  3. Most songs are from the 2010s with a few exceptions
  4. Each song(s) on this list will have a breakdown of what makes them a Halloween song.
  5. Enjoy this list and my personal playlist (will be included at the end) 🎃

Let’s get this party started!

1. Turn Off The Light (The Album)- Kim Petras

Pop artist Kim Petras made an entire album that screams Halloween. She released this back in 2013. It’s still a fun album to listen to. Each song has a different Halloween trope involved like the fear of dying and warning others about the danger. One of my personal favorites are tracks 6 and 12, “Massacre” and “Turn Off The Lights.” The entire album reminds me of songs that you only dance to at a Halloween party with your best girlfriends. Plus, I love her music, so if you’re not into the whole scary aspect of Halloween, then I highly recommend adding one of these tracks to your Halloween playlist to give a lively atmosphere. You become the life of the party once you start hearing one of her beats!

2. A Nightmare on My Street- Will Smith ft Jazzy Jeff

I know this is considered old now since it was first released in 1988(over 30 years old crazy, right?)

However, What’s not to love?

Will is literally telling the listeners what he experienced with his encounter with our favorite Christmas sweater-wearing killer. Plus, his monologues with Jazzy J towards the end are always funny to me.

Freddie +Will = Such a classic!

3. Heads Will Roll- Yeah Yeah Yeah.

Dance till you’re dead is what made this tune the number 1 track during the early 2010s. There are a bunch of remixes associated with the song, but my favorite is the one above. Great house song!

4. Heathens- 21 Pilots

Suicide Squad has one of the best movie soundtracks in the 2010s. I mean, everyone was featured on it. We had Kehlani, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Skrillex, Panic! At The Disco, and many more included in this soundtrack. Out of all the breakout hits on it, one takes the cake. “Heathens” not only describes the squad but people as a whole. In this world, they are men and women who we are quick to rule out because they’re deemed different or weird but really misunderstood. They are the monsters. Another great example is the villains in the anime/manga series, My Hero Academia.

Their relations to the members of the Suicide Squad are uncanny. In both groups, you have a wise older guy, a crazed cute girl, the mad scientist, and the child-like everyone adores. I don’t mind the weird and unusual cause they make the world a bit more interesting. Call me crazy but I don’t do boring.

Anyway, If you’re a huge 21 Pilots fan, I highly suggest you check out this song review to get even more in-depth with “Heathens” potential meaning.

5. Glory & Gore- Lorde

As said in the lyrics,

Everyone a rager (oh-oh)
But secretly they’re saviors
Glory and gore go hand in hand

It sounds like the kind of song that can hype you for the night ahead!

6. Killer Shangi-Lah Psychotic Beats

Literally, the lyrics are repeating the phrase: I’m going to kill you. Pretty self-explanatory. This was the trailer song for the BBC original series, Killing Eve.

Killing Eve is one show I always recommend to others cause it’s that good. Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer playing a cat and mouse version of Sherlock in modern-day, that doesn’t sound interesting enough? Did I mention that Jodie plays a female psychopath maybe a little too well at times?

The song itself is still a bop, it has a 60s sound with the beat and band sound.

7/8. Blinding Lights & In the Night — The Weeknd

“Blinding Lights” reminds me of Ne-Yo’s “Beautiful Monster” in the sense that both are talking about getting with a girl. The only difference is Ne-Yo directly whereas The Weeknd talks indirectly about his love for a woman.

“In the Dark” definitely has major Micheal Jackson vibes throughout from the beats to the lyrics. It has a catchy beat, fully danceable, and still tells a story of a girl alone at night. A perfect recipe for a Halloween hit!

9. Sweet but Pyscho- Ava Max

If the Weeknd was trying to impress girls in the previous two tracks then Ava is trying to warn guys about which type of girls to look out for. Hot psychotic types think of Megan Fox’s character in Jennifer’s Body.

Creepy!

Basically, men need to look out cause some of these girls be playing the long game sucking you dry and I don’t mean just financially. Emotions are heavily involved so, be careful about who you decide to bring home.

10. Tag, You’re It - Melanie Martinez

I love this album! This is rare since I usually only like a few per album. Her music is a mix of pretty pink gumdrops mixed with unexpected dark licorice. Better yet, a great dream that ends with a nightmare that makes you slightly paranoid after waking up.

“Tag You’re It” is every parent’s worst nightmare. Imagine a stranger snatching your innocent child up by alluring them with sweets. Kidnappings are more common than we believe. Today’s world can be scary and unpredictable at times especially since we’re in the middle of a global pandemic among otherworldly issues knocking at our doorsteps.

The moral of this song, be careful of your surroundings and don’t talk to strangers kiddos.

Next time you’re trying to look for more songs to dance to during this year or even Halloween 2021 party, add these along with many other on my playlist below.

Listen. Enjoy. Rock on! 🤘🏾🎃👌🏾
