1st Week Edition

That is such a cliche, but it’s somewhat true. The road to adulthood is knocking and approaching faster than ever. It wasn’t that long ago that I was moving into my dorm and trying to find my classes. I completely understand how stressful and tiring school can be. Not only do you have to deal with the pressures of being in new surroundings, but to add to it, living in a post- COVID world in general.

No worries, you’ll do fine! Whether schools in session now or soon. I want to give those who are freshmen up to Seniors a few tips to go by for a successful and productive 1st week. Ok, here we go. 😉

#1 Do pick your classes early

Once you figure out which courses you need to take, find out when the period of choosing next semester classes is. It’s crucial to pick classes you like and the ideal time you want before the term starts so you can completely relax during break. I would recommend picking them right after finals, so you know which classes you can take next or repeat if you failed.

#2 Don’t wait last minute

If you wait until those last few weeks before school starts, then you’ll most likely be stuck with a class schedule you won’t necessarily like.

#3 Check your surroundings.

Very important since this is a new environment, you need to get familiar with the various classrooms, lunch area, and gym. Also, it’s a great way to pinpoint the distance between your classes. If you’re doing classes remotely, then make sure your background is not too distracting when entering video class chats.

#4 Don’t forget your schedule

If you forgot your printed schedule at home, don’t sweat. Before the 1st day arrives, take a picture of the schedule, and if you have iCloud or something related, then save it in there so that you’re not running around campus like a chicken having its head cut off.

If you’re doing classes remotely, I highly recommend your download all your classes syllabus then add the due dates of your assignments in your planner or calendar, so you don’t ever have to worry about a late mark again.

#5 Do have writing utensils.

When your meeting teachers/professors, they’ll tell you a bunch of important info like what textbooks to have and their contact info so you must have at least a pen/pencil or your laptop/ phone notes to drop it all down.

#6 Don’t be standoffish.

Communication is key. At least say hi to one person in your classes because you might never know when you could meet your future lifelong friend.

#7 Do get to know your teachers

Important to know your teachers and tell them who you are so that way, when it comes time to do letters of recommendation or looking for internships, you automatically know who you can ask ahead of time.

#8 Don’t get too involved with current drama

Keep a little distance if you’re friends with people who don’t get along and focus on yourself for the time being, especially if you’re new to the situation.

#9 Do get involved in extracurricular activities

Another way to meet new people and also a way to get to know yourself by getting to know what you like or don’t like. Plus, most of the upcoming semester it’ll be either online or on campus.

#10 Have Fun

School is not only about academics, but you also need a social life as well. Being social is beneficial to your self-confidence, health, and happiness. A healthy social life is equally as important and shouldn’t be ignored. Giving yourself time to have fun and relax gives your brain a break and enriches your college years. Remember to have fun and do what interests you!
